Registered Health Information Technician
Progression Program

The Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) Progression Program allows professionals with an RHIT credential to complete their education at their own pace. Since most of these individuals are currently in the workforce, this program is flexible enough to accommodate their needs. The Progression Program takes the RHIT's knowledge a step further by focusing on all aspects of management within health information, which includes management of a department, a budget, staff, systems, databases, confidentiality and reimbursement.

This program is completely online. A minimum of 124 credit hours are required to obtain a Bachelor of Science, half of which are prerequisites and electives & the other half are HIM courses. Credit for the HIM courses is earned through a combination of HIM course work, portfolio credit and challenge exams. Your RHIT, Associate's Degree, and work experience will determine which courses are subject to portfolio credit &/or challenge examinations.

Joint Bachelor of Science/Masters Program
The joint Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management/Master of Health Services Administration Program (BSHIM/MHSA) is offered through the Department of Health Policy and Management in association with the Department of Health Information Management at the University of Kansas. By participating in the intensive, full-time bridge program, students can achieve both degrees in five years. HIM students who are interested in the BSHIM/MHSA bridge program must apply to the bridge during their Junior year, spring semester, so that they are admitted to the Masters portion of the program prior to their Senior year in the Bachelor of Science program.

Students pursuing the BSHIM/MHSA option will be prepared to assume management and executive positions in health-related organizations (e.g., hospitals, managed care organizations, health information system developers and vendors, and pharmaceutical companies) and to bring their expertise in health information management to these positions.

Students do not apply to the School of Allied Health for this program. For advising and program information including applications and requirements please visit the BSHIM/MHSA bridge program page.
